Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara

It's said twins have some unexplainable connection - some instinctive bond. That may go some way to explaining the mind-blowing musical connection between Tegan and Sara.

The Con is their fifth album together. But first, here is a brief history:

Born (at the same time, give or take eight minutes), raised in Calgary, Canada, fifteen years pass, they find a guitar, record demo tapes at school and in their bedrooms, enter a ‘garage band' competition (it was the '90s) and win, make The Yellow Tape, graduate from high school and make two more demos, The Orange Tape and The Red Tape, play shows and do small tours through Canada (take a breath here...).

They record Under Feet Like Ours in April of 1999, start to tour more extensively in Canada, eventually send the album to Elliot Roberts (president of Vapor Records), sign a record deal with Vapor, record This Business Of Art and go on tour in the US with Neil Young, then headline Canada, tour with Rufus Wainwright and Melissa Ferrick, make their first attempt at touring Europe and Japan and play David Letterman!

They head back into the studio with John Collins of the New Pornographers and David Carswell of The Smugglers in February 2002 to make If It Was You then tour with Ryan Adams and Hot Hot Heat, manage to come down to Australia for the first time, go back into the studio with JC/DC and Doward Redekopp in February 2004 to make So Jealous, finally sell some records, get nominated for a Juno, go on tour with The Killers, The White Stripes cover one of their songs and they buy Hummers...just kidding.

They tour and tour and tour and after 18 months on the road decide to take some real time off, see the seasons change, record demos like crazy, add drums, bass, guitars and keyboards. They meet up with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), give him the demos, make a plan to relocate to Portland to record with him, walk to the studio everyday and focus on keeping the songs as close to the demos as possible.

March 12 arrives and the album is finished, a movie is ready to be edited, they go home, Sara arrive in exile, Tegan goes to Hawaii in search of Dog the bounty hunter.

The Con. Fall for it at Southbound.
